Hermitage Terminal Duroc - The 'Angus' of the Pig Breeds !
The Duroc Breed is world renowned for their excellent meat quality and taste. Much of the beneficial characteristics of the duroc meat quality is as a direct result of the high level of 'marbling' or intramuscular fat, (deposition of fat throughout the muscle fibres), which enhances the taste and succulence of the meat.
The duroc breed has become the terminal sire of choice in many markets, including Denmark, which exports pigmeat worldwide, and duroc is also widely used in the USA, Russia and Asia. The breed is recognised for its meat colour and low drip loss, which is particularly sought after in key export markets such as Japan.
Hermitage have actively developed our duroc terminal sire for the past 6 years with selected imports of the lowest backfat, fastest growing duroc lines from the United States. Backfat levels have been reduced by 3mm to an average of 8mm and growth rates have increased with over a 10 day improvement in this period. The resulting terminal duroc is a truly 'Hylean' animal, with low backfat and excellent meat quality characteristics. Piglets are robust, hardy and durable and suited to many different production systems worldwide.
